Commissions

Pagen Studio brings over 30 years of experience, with projects ranging from 40 inches to over 40 feet. His work has been recognized and supported by fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oregon Arts Commission. The studio’s credits span a global context, having completed projects throughout the United States and abroad. He brings a high standard of creative problem solving to each commission, and understands that a fulfillment of sound strategy and solid objectives are the keys to a successful project.

“Geoffrey Pagen’s ceramic wall pieces are thickly made constructions that use contemporary hieroglyphic symbols to convey meaning through color intensities, graphical mark making, and richly glazed textures. Pagen’s work reference a great deal from antiquity, such as the blue tiled grand entryways of Babylon, found in the Louvre in Paris. Pagen uses a grid structure as a means to allow the abstract nature of his designs to exist in a meaning filled cultural context dialoguing the ancient with the present. The modular nature of Pagen’s ceramic encourages the viewer to make the leap beyond the domain formerly held by abstract painting into a grand ceramic vision. Interestingly enough this ceramic leap creates a visual resonance that would be easily understood far beyond the borders of our contemporary culture, into a much wider global and ethnic aesthetic. Pagen’s ceramics bring together many intriguing art relationships within the calibrations of both interior and exterior environments, natural and man-made.”
